Changes and Progress for CRWC

January 22nd, 2008

In December, Charles River Web Connections (CRWC) released a sleek new look for our website. Our new design showcases our personal sense of style and skill at execution.

After working extensively with Kitchen Cabinet, we have launched their new site. Check it out at http://www.kitchencabinetny.com/.

CRWC is also working with databases for the Onondaga County Mental Health Association, and for Samarak business services, which helps accountants, bookkeepers, and QuickBooks consultants obtain business over the web. Our relationship with the New England Trail Riders Association has continued to take on new dimensions, as we implement innovative database solutions to their everyday problems.

CRWC Summer Wrap-up

September 18th, 2007

This has been a productive and exciting summer for Charles River Web Connections (CRWC). We have begun discussions with a variety of different organizations and have made plans to be working on multiple new projects this fall.

CRWC has realized that many of our customers need consulting about their technical needs beyond web design. This is a new direction that we would like to explore. We are entering the field of IT audits as well as consulting and planning for future growth. Our goal is to work closely with our clients to ensure that they are headed in the right direction to meet their technical needs.

We are also working with a company called Kitchen Cabinet, based in NYC. We expect to launch their new site at the end of the month.

CRWC wants your input! We are very interested in getting more involved in the Syracuse and Boston areas. If you know of an opportunity for CRWC to help the community, let us know! We’d love to hear your suggestions and comments. Send us an email at info@crwebconnections.com, and tell us about ways that CRWC can work more closely with the community.

New Team Members Contribute to Ongoing CRWC Success

June 22nd, 2007

In the last month, CRWC has hired a number of great new team members who will help take the company in exciting new directions. With their input, we have continued to move forward with many current projects and started development of new ones as well.

Continued progress has been made for the website for Cornell Alumni Class of 1965. We have finished the design process, and started coding. CRWC anticipates the completion of their website in the near future.

We have also continued work with Campaign Base, and started talks with Bell Curves in order to develop a strategy for CRWC to expand their existing web-based system. Expected in the coming month is the launch of CRWC’s marketing campaign for the newest version of our File Management System (FMS). We look forward to meeting many new clients in the summer months.

CRWC begins work on FMS Version 3

May 15th, 2007

This month, the CRWC team has been finishing up the website for Cornetta-Brown Associates. We have also launched a brand new website for the Massachusetts Motorcycle Association, which can be found at mma.clubexpress.com.

But the big news for CRWC this month is the continuing development of our File Management System (FMS). We have been conducting research about how our clients use the current FMS software, and using this information to develop the specs for the next version of the system. With expected release in September 2007, we anticipate that the new and improved FMS will incorporate newer technology like Ruby on Rails, Adobe Apollo, SSL, Adobe Flex, and Flash. It will have a variety of new features and the capability to change the way our clients manage their files.

Helpful Hints for Young Entrepreneurs

April 16th, 2007

This article, written by CRWC Director Robert J. Sherman, was recently published on the Young Money Magazine website. You can view the article here.

I started Charles River Web Connections (CRWC), a web development and database management firm four years ago while in high school. I am now a sophomore enrolled at Syracuse University, triple-majoring in finance, information studies and technology, and entrepreneurship and emerging enterprises.

Although I have a lot of schoolwork, CRWC has still managed to stay strong. With ten employees and counting, CRWC is working with big names like Cornell University, Crossman Engineering, the Wireless Grids Consortium (a research group with participants including IBM, Nokia, and French Telecom), and various emerging politicians and political groups in the New York /New England area.

College-aged business owners aren’t a rarity these days, but starting a serious business as a high school student is still intimidating. Getting a business off the ground is the first and most debilitating obstacle young entrepreneurs face today. Good ideas are everywhere, but to make them into great ideas, you have to put them into action. You can start your own company at any age. Entrepreneurship isn’t just for people with specific business training; it’s for anyone who wants to take advantage of an opportunity. Here are some tips to help you get started:

1) Starting a company at an early age can give you a competitive edge. Young people have many creative ideas flowing, and often a substantial amount of free time. If you’re doing something you love, thinking about your company becomes your daydreaming. I had always been around computers, and my business grew out of that. Another key motivation for me was the desire to manage my own schedule, and be able to plan my work around my other interests.

2) Be prepared to make mistakes and ask for help. When I first started CRWC I did a lot of shooting in the dark. If I didn’t know how to do something, I found someone who did. At first, I was surprised to realize how much information and advice was available. People love giving advice about things they have a passion for. The knowledge was there, I just had to ask the right questions. Don’t be timid; learn as you go - you don’t need to have it all figured out at the very beginning; it’s an educational process.

3) Perfect your time management skills. Handling a triple-major workload and a rapidly growing company requires an extraordinary amount of efficiency. Once you reach the level of being able to plan out your time and sit down and work through projects, you’ll find that you can get a surprising amount of work done at once. Standardizing and streamlining day-to-day processes to minimize inefficiencies is often helpful in both the short- and long-term. If administrative processes are “lean”-efficient and easy to duplicate-entrepreneurs can spend less time supervising and more time expanding on new ideas.

4) Balance, balance, balance. Earning an undergraduate degree and running a business both require a lot of time, but I still make time for other things I love, including Dirt biking, woodworking, photography, and some occasional XBOX. Having other interests and a social life is crucial to avoiding early burn-out. Don’t develop “target fixation”-concentrating too hard on one problem. Being creative and efficient often requires a fresh mind, so time away from work is imperative.

5) When you’re ready to grow, choose carefully. Be selective about who you hire when the time to expand comes. Make sure their goals are aligned with your own, and pay close attention to their work habits. Hiring people who bring out the best in your company, people you can work with, is very important. It’s important to have well-written contracts that minimize liability and protect both the owner and the employee. Being clear about expectations from the very beginning is central to creating a healthy work environment.

6) Creative marketing is key. One mistake I made early on is that I wasn’t innovative enough in my marketing strategies. Since then I’ve learned to keep my target audience in the forefront of my mind at all times. It’s important to think like potential clients and walk through each step to get an idea of what the marketing piece looks like from the other end. You have to be in the places where they’d look for you, otherwise you’re just wasting time and money.

7) Stay focused. Don’t let your entrepreneurial spirit shut off the second you take the leap into starting your business. That’s just the beginning. Stay opportunity-focused. There is a way to use everything to your advantage, so keep being creative! And a special piece of advice for college students: there’s a useful little thing I like to call “the morning.” Don’t forget to use it! From nine to noon the dorms are quiet, and your clients are already at the office - it’s a great time to clear administrative work out of the way.

Exciting Expansion at CRWC

January 2007 News

February 9th, 2007

January was a busy month for CRWC.

Charles River Web Connections is pleased to announce the opening of our Syracuse office! In addition to all the changes we’re making to our website, we have officially opened a remote office in Syracuse to better serve our Upstate and Central New York clients.

Over the course of the past month, CRWC has increased our involvement with Cornell University, and entered into discussions with two law firms, along with a few other potential clients in the Syracuse area. We’ve also been working along side of HR Alliance Group to help them produce a professional-quality newsletter.

CRWC has also begun working with CampaignBase.com, a company that offers a web-based application which helps politicians on any level manage campaign information and reach voters through the internet. We will be doing a large amount of graphic design with CampaignBase’s product, and our work will be a vital part of their initial product launch in the near future.

2007 Outlook

January 9th, 2007

2006 was certainly an exciting year for Charles River Web Connections, and 2007 looks even more promising. We’re making big changes to serve you better.

CRWC started off the new year with a new look for our website. We’ve added more detailed content about our services and a company blog where the staff will regularly be posting to share interesting information about current technology and trends on the web. Check back regularly to see what CRWC staff has to say about what’s happening on the internet!

Expansion

We are quickly expanding in many ways, and to fit our growing needs CRWC is pleased to welcome a few new staff members on board for 2007. We are looking to increase our client base dramatically, and the new hires will be there to support the growing work load as CRWC increases marketing efforts. “Our philosophy is that by bringing individuals together from a variety of backgrounds you have the ability to see the project from all aspects,” says Director Robert Sherman.

A big project for CRWC in the early part of 2007 is the location of missing classmates for Cornell University. We have been working with Cornell Alumni on class web pages, and have recently extended our services to find alumni whose addresses in the Cornell database are outdated. We have made a lot of progress in this area, and hope to share this service with Alumni Associations from other colleges and universities in the very near future.

An exciting improvement in 2006 was the development of our Secure File Management System as the first of many business solution tools by CRWC. Over the course of 2007, we hope to create at least two more web-based business products that will enable your company to function faster, more easily and more efficiently.

The Next Step

CRWC wants to take your company to the next level in 2007. Our philosophy is One Company, One Image—your business needs to present a unified face in all of your marketing pieces, and we can help you do it. We will be enhancing our associations with royalty free media companies to gain wider access to millions of images, drawings and videos. Let us use our connections to help you make connections in the upcoming year. Give us the opportunity to provide you with One Image that you can be proud of, not just on the web, but in all areas of your marketing strategy.
